Almost two years ago, I bought a Dell Latitude 7390 off of ebay. I love this little laptop! It’s perfect in almost every way… except when it comes to Linux. I’ve been struggling to get Linux to load on this thing since I’ve owned it. The one problem that seems to be occurring is that on Debian-based distros like Ubuntu and Linux Mint, the system will lock up usually on the boot screen. On Red Hat-based distros, like Fedora, it will generally boot but then freeze or lock up shortly after.
I haven’t validated this yet on Ubuntu, but on Fedora, adding i915.enable_psr=0 to the grub boot options made the system actually boot up and not freeze. This is a flag that will disable panel self refresh. The one side effect seems to be (from forums, I haven’t tested yet) slightly increased power consumption.
I need to do some more testing, but so far it seems to work. I might actually be able to use Linux on this laptop after all!
